Background

2015: Gothenburg

The initial idea for NYGP was moulded during the Nordic Congress of General Practice (NCGP) in Gothenburg, Sweden in 2015. A dedicated group of researchers and GPs from the Nordic countries, who had previously met through Vasco da Gama Movement, today called EYFDM (European Young Family Doctors Movement), intended to establish a Nordic network. This should welcome medical students with a strong penchant for general medicine, GPs in training as well as newly qualified specialists in general medicine with less than 5 years of service as a specialist.

2016: NFGP SupportIn spring 2016, NYGP applied the NFGP for financial support to plan and realise an inaugural seminar (today referred as Nordic Leader Seminar) in autumn 2016. The aim was to discuss and to define the Network's visions and objectives.

2016: NYGP SeminarThe NFGP granted said funds, and a total group of 13 researchers and general practitioners – and the NYGP manager met 14-16 October in two cottages near Reykjavik. Participants counted two representatives from all the Nordic countries of: Finland, Sweden, Norway, Iceland, and Denmark – incl. two additional representatives from the Faroe Islands.

Ulrik Bak Kirk was hired as network manager to facilitate the founding and development of the NYGP Network.

2017: ReykjavikSince 2017, NYGP has organised a pre-congress for young doctors before the NCGP congress. NYGP pre-congress is a platform for both professional, inspirational and cultural exchange.

In June 2017, Anna Stavdal's words were repeated during the first NYGP Pre-Congress that was held in collaboration with the Nordic Congress of General Practice in Reykjavik. This was the beginning of ¨pre-congress¨ tradition that will hopefully continue to live on with the NCGP yet to come.

So far NYGP has held four pre-congress, starting with 2017 in Reykjavik, 2019 in Aalborg, 2022 in Stavanger (one year delay due to covid-19 pandemic) and recently in Turku 2024. Next time we plan to meet are May 25-26 2026 in Jönköping, Sweden.
